Life was going fine for Abhishek Jain managing a renowned Hotel in New Delhi. Same schedule everyday. Waking up, going to the job which he loved and coming back. You must be thinking what the issue was?
Lack of content and satisfaction. This was it. There was something that needed to be mend but what was it? When he met his friends, while they wanted to talk about cricket matches and pubs, he wanted to talk about unemployment, poverty, women empowerment, and issues that matter. Every time he started such a conversation, it ended with someone saying “well, it’s real, but what can we do”. And just like that the conversation would close. But Mr Jain could never stop thinking about these issues- issues that matter. He often used to question himself asking how his work is making a difference?
On his way to work everyday, he would come across a girl selling pens. Each day he used to buy 5 of them from her. One day when the traffic light was on, he talked to her for exactly 180 seconds. While enquiring about her family, he found out that the girl was all alone supporting her little brother. She had lost her parents while she was still a baby and now at the age of just 7 she was earning for herself and her brother. She wanted to study but could hardly manage. The entire way to work he thought about how a girl aged 7 years was managing everything all alone.
Mr Jain would often help the girl financially and provide her study material and clothes. Mr Jain was brought up by his grandfather who inculcated in him the importance of helping people and how through investing your time in the service of people satisfies you.
A week later when going to work he noticed that the girl was missing. She didn’t show up for the next 7 days also. Mr Jain got a little worried as for the past 1 year the girl was seen everyday selling pens on the same spot. After inquiring a little, he found out that a car ran over the girl and she died while selling those pens and her brother was absconding. The world stopped moving for him and the same day he quit his job. He decided that the only way one can make a difference is by initiating an action. The guilt of not helping the girl is still fresh in his mind.
After this incident he realized that he lost his way trying to live the traditional life. He took an oath to not waste any minute now and dedicate his life towarding serving people.
Now all that he aims to do is dedicate his life towards making life better for people by using his resources and doing anything in his power to do so. Mr Jain aims to educate India and eradicate illiteracy. He is keen to help students in far flung areas who have no access to the internet or smartphones. He promises to work towards making food and water available for everyone. Mr Jain says he is keen to work on issues that actually matter. Stopping female feticide, stopping sexual harassment, making public places clean and safe for women, letting power supply reach to every nook and corner of villages, promote communal harmony etc.
Mr Jain has set up various camps in Vasant Vihar and urges people to come to the camps with their problems which he tries his best to resolve. Very soon he is planning to start an ambulance service unavailability of which has resulted in loss of many precious lives. This ambulance service will be fast and responsive and will help save crucial seconds during a medical emergency. It is these ideas and more that make him stand out of the crowd. These days young people seem to be obsessed with just themselves and not caring about anything. But Mr Jain’s zest for saving lives, eradicating hunger and acting rather than speaking tells us so much about the kind of person he is.
